three cities in close proximity to each other. They are located in the central
part of Prince George's County and hold the highest value in real estate.
Mitchellville: The smallest of the three cities, is known for it's up scale
homes, the highest household income in the county and is populated by a high
level of educated and professional African Americans. Some of the highlighted
subdivisions in Mitchellville are Woodmore, a gated development with a serene
shoreline of a sixty-seven acre lake, a tournament-class golf course and
single- family homes ranging from $500,000 to $2,000,000; Woodmore South
(directly across the street), with homes ranging from $400,000 to $600,000; and
Woodmore Highlands ranging from $350,000 to $600,000.
The population of Mitchellville is
approximately 12,593. Due to the on-going housing construction there has been a
need for new schools. Charles Flowers High School is one of the newly
constructed schools due to the area growth.
It is definitely a high-tech science and
math school. The student enrollment is 1,760 and the student /teacher ratio is
16/1. Lake Arbor Elementary and Middle Schools are scheduled for completion by
the fall of 2002. These schools are also being built due to area
growth.
Some additional highlights of Mitchellville
are (1) The Newton White Mansion (a reception hall) secluded in the Enterprise
Golf Course, (2) The Prince George's County Boys and Girls Sports Ground and
the Woodmore Country Club. Mitchellville is 20 minutes away from downtown
Washington and 15 minutes from Annapolis.
Bowie: This is a municipal city located in
the same district as Mitchellville. It is slightly larger, closer to Annapolis
and is approximately 18 miles from Washington D.C. According to the Bowie
resource guide, the population of Bowie is about 38,000. Bowie has recently
acquired a portion of real estate that was once considered Mitchellville. This
undoubtedly has increased their overall home value. Most of the schools in
Bowie have high-test scores. The average S.A.T. scores for Bowie High School is
1000. Its newest attraction is the Bowie Town Center; a shopping mall with
great stores and restaurants. There is also a restaurant park with some of the
most popular restaurant chains such as FRIDAYS etc.
Upper Marlboro: This city is the largest of
the three cities. Like Bowie it is represented by several zip codes. It is
located inside the metropolitan beltway and has a very suburban look. Due to
the multiple zip codes, there are several schools servicing the residents of
this city. Most of the upscale homes in upper Marlboro sit on very large lots.

are on well and septic. One of the attractions of Upper Marlboro is The
Equestrian Center. This is a large arena, which is used for shows and county
fairs. Others are the Prince George's County Fair Ground and the Prince
George's County Court House.
Upper Marlboro is also an historical city.
It is the oldest town in the Mid-Atlantic region, and was founded in 1796, the
same year Prince George's County was founded. It is known as the county seat of
